So I'm tryin to re-dye the white cotton shirt again with the Eugenia axillaris berries (White Stopper). This time, I will not wash it afterwards and leave it just as is for my presentation...on my to do list: figure out how to make dyes stay in fabric for longer periods of time.
I'm also making a new dye! I grabbed an old pickle jar and filled it with hot tap water. Then, I cut some blossoms from my Cosmo flowers and put em' in the pickle jar, shook it up, and left it in the sun for a day to see what color dye I get. Exciting I know! There is this awesome book on using plants to create natural dyes and I loooovveee it :

Otay I back from my long internet hiatus! Between Christmas and working at Fairchild Gardens, it's been super duper crazy around here.
For work, they've got me doing an "Intern Project" which basically comes down to more work and less play time :/ At least my project is pretty kewl and something I care about. I'm focusing on ways to make my clothing and fabrics more economically sustainable by re-using fabrics and making new ones from plants. Second to agriculture, our textile industry is the number one polluter of our resources :( so I wanna try and buy mostly organic and vintage from now on.
My project is to make my own "Sustainable Clothing Garden" This means, to grow plants that can be used to make textiles and also planties that i can use to then dye my textiles. Cool right? Yeah well, also super duper difficult! So here's what I gots so far: The Milkweed plant (Asclepias currasavica) has this really neat hairs that are attached to bunches of seeds. I collected the seeds and twisted the hairs to make my own yarn and I'm making a bracelet out of them.
Also, I picked some Luffa, which is the stuff people use as bath scrubbies, yeah, it's actually a fruit from a vine :)
